I was very pleased to see that you ...Dr. Holliday,

I was very pleased to see that you addressed the poverty issue. I teach in a district that does have high poverty rates. In addition, we are finding that many of our students are now being raised by grandparents because their own parents are no longer able to care for them because of drug and alcohol abuse. This only compounds the issues these unfortunate children face. It is very difficult for many of our children to even imagine a future in education because many of their basic human needs are going unmet. The growing number of children living in poverty or being raised by their grandparents means that we are having to make many adjustments to the way we teach and assign work, realizing that many of our students do not have the support they need at home. I do hope that whoever wins the election will choose to address this very serious issue.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9202687599504806318.post-74661136043359481932012-09-07T15:25:03.546-04:002012-09-07T15:25:03.546-04:00Dr. Holliday:
Thanks for posting this thoughtful ...Dr. Holliday:

Thanks for posting this thoughtful list to which I would like to add the issue of immigrants and how well they can participate and achieve in education. Many or most of young immigrant children are born in this country and are legal citizens. However, they experience a huge achievement gap in education. This is a systemic issue and needs to be addressed so that teachers do not have to carry the sole responsibility for change.

Christel Broady, Ph.D.
Director ESL Teacher Endorsement Program
Associate Professor, Georgetown College Graduate Education
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
