I know dress codes tend to vary between schools in our district, but I would genuinely hope serious matters, like discipline, would be very formal and very specific and apply to all the schools in a district, wouldn't that eliminate any gender/race/class bias?Misty Cottonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07855173836690266858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9202687599504806318.post-47578364744292176612014-06-07T22:06:42.528-04:002014-06-07T22:06:42.528-04:00The examples given are from national data. And, in Jefferson County, this work is high-profile and intentional on the part of the administration, the board and teachers. I was concerned about the blog example; that this could really happen. I investigated and found that, for example, in JCPS no preschool student had been suspended this year -- only one last year and it was not for such an insignificant issue. There is certainly plenty of data to review and perhaps this situation happened. But I don't want the public to be influenced by generalized stories. Educators work hard to do well, and, with guidance, resources and positive supports, will continue to address behavior issues more productively. We have embraced PBIS, and student response teams. It really will take assistance from the entire community to change the lives of all children.
